Our Civil War Ancestors
I have recently been contacted by a fellow named Mike Evans who is a descendant of
Pvt. Gideon Kennedy who enlisted in Co. A, 19th Indiana. This is his story.
Gideon Kennedy was born and grew up in Wabash, Co. Indiana. He later moved to
Delaware Co. Indiana where he lived when the war broke out. He answered Lincoln’s
call for volunteers and enlisted in a volunteer infantry company calling themselves
“The Unions Guards” and would be assembled into the 19th Indiana Infantry
Regiment as Company A. He was wounded in his first combat action at Brawner’s
Farm where he was struck by a Minnie ball to the face. It must have been a glancing
blow because it was not mortal. While recovering from his wound in a Washington
DC hospital, he met President Lincoln who came to visit the wounded soldiers there.
He would make a full recovery and returned to the regiment where he saw action again
at Gettysburg and The Wilderness. He re-enlisted, but the 19th failed to meet their
quota and he and the other fellows from the 19th who re-enlisted were transferred to
the 20th Indiana.
At the conclusion of the war he would witness Lee’s surrender at Appomattox
Courthouse. Gideon lived a long life until his death in 1931 living to an incredible
95 years old.
Mess Nite 2009
Mess Nite will be Saturday April 25 at the Indianapolis Propylaeum Club at 1410
N. Delaware Street in Indy’s near North Side. Though the overnight
accommodations are limited, it has plenty of free parking on site and will be able to
fulfill our needs perfectly in every other way. Some of you who came to my wedding a
few years ago will remember this place as it was the site of our reception. I have been
working with Chef Mike to create a meal that will resemble the menu of Lincoln’s
inauguration dinner. For $35, diners will have a choice of a beef or chicken entre. I
need to have a firm head count by April 4. Please make your reservations before
then. Make your check of $35/plate out to 19th Ind. Co. A and be sure to note
your choice of beef or chicken entre. Mail it to me
